I have to agree with James in Calgary. I hear atmospheric music that blends with the art to create a richly textured collage. I think that pop lyrics would compete rather than complement the letters, postcards, thoughts and dialogue.
Most of the world have never heard the haunting Celtic harp of Canadian Loreena McKennitt. Another great band that had a bestselling album in Europe, but is virtually unknown in North America is ERA.
They invented a timeless "language", which sounds a little like Latin in honor of the Cathar people who were persecuted during the Spanish Inquisition. Perhaps this race of people are related to the nomadic country of Capolan? ERA's music combines ancient chants with modern instruments in a completely new way that might just add the right atmosphere to a G&S movie scene.
