Hi, pretty is a tough word for me. It conjures up images beyond its dictionary definition. If I can switch to beauty, then I feel more comfortable and I think we're still talking about the same language. Yes, I do believe that beauty is a very important element within collage or any art form. To me Cornell's work is incredibly beautiful, but it's not sentimental, and therein lies the key. Nostalgia brings personal meaning to a piece, but sentimentality (pretty without soul) just trivializes real emotion. Decoration is craft without art. There's nothing wrong with that, but if anyone wants to push their craft up the ladder to the moon, they have to take their shadow with them. - Nick
